In Autumn 2012, Paul Auster’s memoir “Winter Journal” was published in the United Kingdom by Faber & Faber and in the United States by Henry Holt and Company.  The first edition of the book included a false passage suggesting that an old friend who was not named was the source of a sexually transmitted disease contracted by the author. This was an untrue assertion which the author now recognises was an error.  The  book also revealed some sensitive personal information about the same person.

The author and publishers regret that this publication  has caused offence and  hurt to this person.  The author freely acknowledges his mistake and apologises for its publication, as do Faber & Faber and Holt who amended the text on receipt of the complaint about the false allegation.  The text of this apology will be kept with Paul Auster’s work in the Berg Collection.
